LESSONS FROM A THE SPARE KEY

Growing up, we were often given 2-3 padlocks at the beginning of the school year. One for our school locker, one for our locker in the dormitory, and one for our luggage while we travelled to school.

The padlock always came with a set of keys, each key a copy of the others.

You had to keep your spare keys hidden from thieves, but not too hidden that you would be unable to find them when you needed them.

I lost more spare keys than I can count.

My father, being a gentleman, never scolded me for it, but simply bought a new padlock if I lost my keys in the middle of the school year. (Thank you, sir!)

Some padlocks were so weak that thieves could break them open.

It seems losing keys became a hobby of mine, and with time I also learned how to ‘jack’ a padlock just to be able to get out books from my locker at school or get into my hostel locker.

There are wisdom keys that have been given to us to keep our dreams, thoughts and heart safe.

How careful, or intentional, are we with our thoughts, dreams and aspirations?

Do we speak about them carelessly to potential dream killers, or perhaps abandon them locked away at the first sign of setbacks or failure?

You have a spare key.

It’s called faith, hope and determination.
It’s called counsel, a wise support system.
It’s called planning, strategy, seeking knowledge and growing in expertise.

No dream deserves to be buried, abandoned or treated carelessly.

Get your spare keys, open up your dream locker and execute!

Don’t let this year pass by just like the year’s past.

Do something about your dreams every day.

It could be a vision statement, a mission map, a business plan, but make sure it is something you can expand on every day.

Start with what you have and where you are; keep your dreams, plans and thoughts of tomorrow safe from naysayers and enemies of progress.

Wipe the dust off your journal, diary or the notebook where you wrote your plans for the year, and ‘walk’ the needed steps that will take it from ‘I want to’ into ‘Done’.

Rooting for you always!
