Growing up, I was scared of the dark. Not just scared, petrified. But somehow in contrast, I
considered nighttime the most beautiful time of the day, the dark night contrasting with an enchanting moon and twinkling stars.

My siblings knew of my fear and used it against me; they would quietly turn off the lights and run
out of the room leaving me alone, often crying and screaming.

One lucky day, I ‘read’ the look on their faces that something was about to ‘go down’; and I grabbed the person closest to me as the light went off and found myself literally flying – my little legs and my body trailing in the air – as I clung to the person’s shoulders while they ran out of the room!

FYI, I am no longer scared of the dark, and I do not mind being alone with the lights off. But, my fears have morphed into the stronger, silent and sometimes unseen monsters of hesitation,
procrastination and self-doubt.

I sometimes catch myself wondering: Can I do this? Are my efforts good enough? Will it be worth it?

To my dismay, for many months and years, I have listened to the negative voices in my head and
placed certain dreams and plans on hold. This is quite ironic for me, as I have often been the ‘jump first, ask questions later’ kind of person, with a principle to start before you are ready, see it as rehearsal so you can be fully prepared when the time comes and yet, in contrast, I have been bound by fear in certain areas of my life.

Today, join me to make a promise to face your fears, to run so fast they cannot keep up or at least,
try your best.

A wise man once said, “Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the ability to press on in spite of it”.
It is okay to be scared, but it is not okay to let it get in the way of your growth, your dreams, and any action you need to take for your next level.

This week, I challenge you to push your limits and ignore the voice of fear and self-doubt.
Take the unthinkable leap, start that business, ask a friend out to dinner, start or finish that book,
dye your hair (just kidding!), seek out investors, build partnerships, wear a bright coloured dress
with red shoes, whatever it is you have been putting off because you were too afraid to do it.

If the pandemic season of 2020 taught us one thing, it’s that life is way too short, one event can
change everything and turn our lives upside down. Stop waiting for the perfect time, because it may
never come. We will never have enough time for any phase of our lives, so let us maximise every
opportunity and kick a**!

PS: It’s okay if you get scared, I do too. Let’s dream and dare together, let’s DO IT AFRAID!

  1. Do it afraid!
I realised that if I think about something too much before doing it, I tend to not do it.
I’ve learned to just face it head on.
    Thank you, Tomi.
