PRACTICING JOY: How to have a steady, productive life in spite of happenings (Part 2)

Hello, beautiful people! In the last post, I discussed two tips that can help us be happy and have joy in our lives despite what happens.

Joy can be a constant state of mind, flowing from our soul into every area of our lives, as opposed to the simple or common emotion of being happy because of one event or good news.

Please refer to the previous post, in it I gave two very important and powerful tips. Here is no.3:

3. Practice and be aware of what brings you joy.

Have you ever gone through your day or week and consciously recalled happy moments? It could be something as simple as a delicious meal, a great song, a chilled stroll, a phone call with a friend, a funny movie or video, acts of service, or just smiling and greeting a child or a stranger.

Make a list of things that bring you joy, and commit to doing those things as often as possible. It could be playing games or sports with your kid’s friends or family, cuddling with your spouse or teddy bear, sipping a cup of tea, running in the morning, listening to uplifting music, going out or spending quality time with family… whatever it may be, make time for simple little things that make you happy and positively affect your life in the long run.

Bad habits will make you sad in the long run, no matter how happy they make you feel. Focus on good things that bring a smile to your face and wholeness on the inside.

4. Go outdoors more.

Sunlight and fresh air help boost mood and reduce depression and inflammation, which are responsible for 80-90% of all diseases. A famous nurse, Florence Nightingale, said, “I know not of anything more important to man that would be more valuable than sunlight and fresh air.

Walk around your house or sit at your door or backyard, go out to the balcony of your office at lunchtime or be intentional as you walk home or go somewhere whenever you are outdoors.

Going outdoors is an excellent source of vitamin D; the oxygen outdoors does more for your lungs than the air you breathe in a closed space. If you cannot go outside,  consciously and intentionally spend time near an open window that lets in the sunshine.

Please make sure not to overdo it to prevent a cold if it’s windy or get sunburn when it’s extremely hot.

5. Appreciate little things.

Keep in mind that this is different from being grateful in general; it involves learning to focus special attention on the little things.

Learn to make the things people overlook and take for granted a big deal in your life; be grateful for a hug from your children, a close friend or family member, a meal cooked by your spouse, a walk in the park, a good book or a great movie, greeting people and being greeted in return, waking up to a new day, drinking a glass of clean water every day.

Learn to appreciate having the lights on, running water, family nearby, or friends you can talk to whenever you are bored or sad.

These things are tremendous blessings, and not everyone has them. Some people wish they had kids screaming in their houses, eating all their food. Some wish they had a spouse who forgets to tidy up, but at least they would have someone to depend on and share their daily lives with.

People wish they had jobs that kept them busy or had loads of free time to do nothing.

There are so many blessings around us that we do not pay for and refuse to take for granted. Please focus on the things money cannot buy; they may be small, but they make our lives richer, fuller, and happier.
