Breathe and Give Thanks

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt so overwhelmed, flustered, or cornered that you almost forgot to breathe? Perhaps in extreme shock, everything around you went blank for a moment, all your attempts to grasp a solution went futile, and your legs could not hold your body weight anymore.

Perhaps nothing serious has happened to you, but you received unpleasant news, and there is nothing you can do about the situation, or you are in a place in your life where you feel stuck and unhappy with the current state of things.

Perhaps you have cried, prayed, and even screamed at the situation, but things refuse to shift, and there isn’t even a cloud in your sky with a glimpse of hope for that miracle…

I have news for you. All hope is not lost, even if you can’t ‘feel’ it. You may be pushed to the proverbial wall, but there is still a way of escape.

Perhaps everything is dark around you right now. Permit me to point a glimmer of light in your direction; you are not alone. You are not hopeless. You are not helpless.

You are way more powerful than you think. There is a solution near you. As the good book says, “Salvation is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.”

Are you ready for a shift? Sit up straight if you can, chin up, and close your eyes for a few seconds. Breathe in deeply through your nose and out through your mouth. One more time… and breathe once again.

Look around you, probably more in your mind, and count three things you are grateful for, not superficially, but in a very specific way. Don’t panic if nothing comes to mind immediately; stay on it until you think of something.

A good place to start would be that challenge or mishap you are going through. It has not come to stay; it will pass, and you will come out stronger. Good things will come, and all things—including what you feel at this moment—will work for your good.

See yourself in the midst of your miracle and give thanks for that as well. Picture it as though it is already happening. Feel the joy and relief as you get the positive report, as you finally hit your goal weight, find your first big client, say ‘I do’ to the love of your life, hold your baby in your arms, and have the desired number of zeros in your account!

We are what we constantly see, think about or put before us. We have a choice to let life move in the direction of our challenges, or we can take a chance to envision what we desire and give thanks as though it has already happened.

In a nutshell, what do you do whenever you feel stuck?

Breathe deeply and intentionally, and give thanks!
